Ayurvedic perspective of PCOD

Polycystic Ovarian Disease or Syndrome is a gynaecological disorder.

Many young girls and middle age women in reproductive age are suffering from this syndrome which is a marked by appearance of multiple cysts on ovaries and disturbances in monthly menstrual cycles.


● Symptoms Women May Experience are as follows :

Menstrual: abnormal menstruation, absence of menstruation, sometimes heavy menstruation, irregular menstruation, short and light menstruation, or spotting

Weight: obesity, overweight, or weight gain

Skin: acne or oily skin

Also common: 

Dark patches of skin in folds and creases ( Acanthasis ),

Depression and Irritability, 

Loss of scalp hair,

Abnormal hair growth on face,

Insulin resistance

Infertility sometimes 


● Ayurvedic View In PCOD/S : 

From Ayurvedic point of view, 

PCOD/S reflects vitiation of Rasa and Rakta Dhatus. 

When levels of impurities and toxins increase in these dhatus, body stores them in form of cysts around ovaries.

Also many other signs n symptoms in PCOD/S patients suggest imbalance of all Three doshas. 

Dhatwagnimandya may also exist in some patients.

History of improper diet and lifestyle is generally found among majority of PCOD/S patients.

Excessive consumption of hormonal pills and contraceptive pills too is reported by many patients.

Mental stress and lack of physical exercise are marked among quite a few ladies with PCOD.

From Ayurvedic perspectives, all these things can produce toxins in body and causes diseases likes PCOD/S


● Diet & Lifestyle Advice as follows: 

Minimize the intake of dairy products such as cheese paneer butter curd and other sweet milk products. Butter milk is good. 

Lighter fruits, such as apples, oranges, grape fruit, pineapple and papaya and pears, are recommended.

Sweeteners: Honey and Chemical Free Jaggery is allowed.

Avoid white sugar. 

Beans are recommended. Nuts should be avoided.

Grains such as barley, chickpea and millet are recommended. Do not take too much wheat or rice during night meals. Have Jawar Bhakri or Nachni Bhakri 

Spices are recommended only in moderate quantities. Use herbs like garlic, cinnamon, and fenugreek. 

Vegetables such as potatoes and sweet potatoes and Brinjal should be avoided. 

Rest All Fruit Vegetables are allowed. 

Avoid non-vegetarian food. Though Ayurveda allows an occasional intake of fish sometimes.

Stay away from all junk food.

Negative feelings like stress and tension should be avoided. Do not undertake physical or mental work beyond your capacity.

Limit the use of contraceptives.

Follow an active lifestyle, yet the exercises should be according to one's capacity. Both, excessive fasting and overeating are harmful.

Smoking, drinking alcohol and using narcotics aggravates menstrual disorders.

Follow a natural sleep cycle. Avoid sleeping during the day time and try to get uninterrupted sleep during night.


● Yoga And Asanas Recommend For 

PCOD/S are as follows:

Naukasana (Boat Pose)

Bhadrasana (Butterfly Pose)

Sarvangasana (Reverse Body Or Shoulder Stand Pose)

Shalabhasana (The Locust Pose)

Bharadvajasana (Bharadvaja’s Twist)

Padmasana (Lotus Pose)

Dhanurasana ( Bow Pose)

Bhujangasana ( Snake Pose)

Matsyasana ( Fish Pose )

Kapalbhati and Bhastrika Pranayama daily for 5-5 mins along with Brisk Walking for 20 mins helps alot..
